Startups Old People and Robert Scoble

Written over 1 year ago by Ericson Smith

I'm 45 years old, and it would be tough for me to enter a startup now. I'd encourage all the older folks to bootstrap your own business. You certainly have the experience.

When I hit 40, I realized that it was all downhill -- as far as getting employment was concerned -- and thats why I started w3matter.com in my spare time while I was still working in a company with younger founders than myself. Once the business got going, I left.

Yes, I'm coming to Robert Scoble in a minute.

So now we hire young whipper-snappers, and teach them a thing or two about scaling, programming, and business models. The thing about this career of programming, is that once you get above a certain age, you have to transition out into management. No one thinks you can program anymore!

I've also been watching some of the most exciting startup interviews and it struck me that the founders were mostly grey hairs, in their late thirties, forties or fifties. So there is a future, but not in banging out code, but in shepherding talent into making kick-ass products and services.

So how does Robert Scoble fit into all of this? He's been making videos of some of the most exciting startups that from what I've seen, are largely founded and helmed by people around my age. Building43 is a must add to your RSS reader.
